Ayurvedic Guide to a Golden Summer Glow

With warm temperatures and beach season upon us, we all find ourselves craving that effortless summer glow. You know the glow that looks like you just came back from a tropical vacation where your daily routine was sipping cucumber water on the beach? Yeah, that one.

At Sahajan, we believe that your glow is not simply skin-deep; it comes from within. Ayurveda poses the thought that everything is connected; our mind, body, soul and, of course, our skin. Nourishing these aspects of ourselves and uniting them will translate to a shining everlasting radiance, regardless of the season we're in!

SKINCARE

1. Our go-to essential product

Our absolute favourite product for achieving that gorgeous glow this summer has to be the Brightening Mask. Drawing inspiration from traditional Haldi masks used in the Indian subcontinent, the brightening mask's star ingredient is the golden spice itself, turmeric. Turmeric is revered in India and is often used with brides having a Haldi ceremony dedicated to applying it on their entire body to achieve an unmatchable glow for their big day. Packed with fruit extracts and adaptogens like holy basil, simply applying our Brightening Mask for 15 minutes will reveal a fresh glowing complexion.

2. Facial massage

Massaging techniques are revered in Ayurveda for the body and the skin. Our favourite unwinding ritual is with a gua sha or kansa wand and the Beauty Oil. Facial massages increase the blood circulation in your skin, improving the skin's appearance and giving it the most radiant glow.

3. SPF

This last skincare tip is a must, not just for the summer but all year around. Apply a liberal amount of SPF as the last step of your skincare routine 15 minutes before going outside. Sun protection is truly the key to glowing skin as damaging UV rays can lead to skin cancer, hyperpigmentation and premature aging.

BODY AND HAIRCARE

1. Body Oil

Not only will body oiling make your skin glow but combining it with a nourishing Ayurvedic self-massage such as abhyanga will improve blood flow and lymphatic drainage throughout your body along with decreasing hyperpigmentation and cellulite. A body oil we recommend would have to be our Ritual Body Oil.

2. Hair Oil

Let's leave dry and dull hair for the winter months and embrace shiny locks and healthy scalps. Whether you add a few drops of our Nurture Hair Oil to the ends of your hair for extra sheen or your entire head as an oil treatment, adding hair oil to your routine  is a great way to restore luster to your locks and get it beach-ready.

FOOD

1. Cucumber water

What you put inside your body is equally, if not more important than what you put on it. Staying hydrated is key as one of the first indicators of dehydration is dullness and dryness in the skin. If you find water to be tasteless and boring, you're not alone. Add some cucumber slices (or even some mint!) to leave your tastebuds rejoicing and your body too. Cucumber has tons of antioxidants, minerals and vitamins and are fun to eat after you finish your water as a little snack!

2. Fruits

We all love a sweet treat from time to time and the summer months mean that sometimes we indulge in a few too many ice creams (if you know, you know!). While sweet treats are great in moderation, there are other ways to satisfy your cravings. Eating seasonal fruits is an excellent source of vitamins and fibers while also being naturally sweet, juicy and delicious. The vitamins A, B, C, K and others in fruits like oranges, mangos, papayas and berries will have your stomach thanking you and your skin glowing!

SOULCARE

1. Yoga

The post-yoga glow is the new post-gym glow! Yoga is an excellent way to stretch out every part of your body, improve balance and posture, focus on your breathing and relieve stress and tension. Whether you're a beginner or an expert, I'm sure we can all agree that after a yoga session, our minds feel clearer and our bodies more fluid.

2. Meditation

A summer staple, meditation helps us to recenter ourselves, focus on what's important and maintain a peaceful mind. While the summer months are bursting with fun activities and get-togethers, taking even just a few minutes in the morning or at the end of the day to meditate can immensely improve the quality of your day-to-day life.

3. Affirmations

A powerful tool for self-growth, repeating or writing down positive affirmations in the morning will help you confidently tackle the rest of the day. One of our favorite morning affirmations is "I radiate positivity and love throughout the day." How could you not be glowing after saying that?
